Australia & Mildura

Peter was just 17 when he made the six week trip by boat through the Panama Canal from Amsterdam, Holland to Melbourne. Arriving in November 1959, with his parents and seven of his ten siblings, Peter came to Australia ready to start a new life.

Peter was originally studying to be a Priest but after repairing a second-hand typewriter he bought at a market, he discovered a new passion. Peter realised that he not only enjoyed fixing things, he was good at it.

After working for a few companies doing typewriter repairs and maintenance, Peter finally settled in a job with Olivetti, not knowing then that it would be his last role as an employee.

The Move to Mildura
Attracted to the warmer climate, Peter started looking into opportunities that would take him to the north. Back in 1965, there were no Olivetti dealers in Mildura, so Peter and a Dutch work colleague made plans to start their own business and fill the gap in the market.

After much planning and several trips to Mildura, Peter’s business partner suddenly withdrew from the venture. Peter, his wife Yvonne and two young sons were now destined for Mildura as sole proprietors.

In 1965, agriculture was the primary industry in Mildura, so this meant that not only were there very few service providing businesses — much to the benefit of Peter — but there was already a large multi-cultural population.

With Peter from Holland and Yvonne from Sri Lanka, they always felt like they belonged and were welcomed warmly by the Mildura community.

Opening the First Shop
With only 200 pounds of borrowed money to fund their venture, Peter and Yvonne rented a small, simple house in town. With no contacts and limited money, they quickly set about finding a location for their new business.

Mildura Office Equipment and Supplies Pty. Ltd. opened up in the winter of 1965 on Tenth Street, in a space they shared with the local piano tuner and seller. They were the first Information Technology ‘IT’ company to set up in North-West regional Victoria, lower regional NSW and regional South Australia.

Two and half years later, with the IT industry booming and the piano business fading, the piano tuner called it a day. Peter inherited all of the space and for a while, found himself not only dealing in typewriters but also selling what was left of
the pianos.

The oeDigital Family

Ivan has bought the company and upgraded the name to oeDigital (previously known as Office Everything) in 2019. He incorporated major changes to the business and exited retail sale of computers and stationery, which in turn called for a change to the business name. Ivan streamlined oeDigital’s services to become the Managed Print Specialist it is today. It is a revitalised and up to date company, keeping ahead of today’s rapidly changing environment.

Ivan’s son Julius is heavily involved in the IT components of the business as vCIO (virtual Chief Information Officer) and has been actively involved in transforming IT support services for the past six years. Having worked as Transport Manager for a major interstate transport & manufacturing company to the mining industry, Julius comes with exceptional organisational experience.

Trust and respect among the staff are the foundations of the incredible, sustainable workplace culture that is oeDigital Pty Ltd.

oeDigital is celebrating 50 years of successful business, but more than that, we are celebrating our customers because without you there is no oeDigital. We have never stood still in our desire to be the best. We have a passionate team, a rich history and a future with outstanding technological processes.

Ivan Janssen Chief Executive Officer / Owner

With a natural capability for IT, Ivan Janssen was destined to join the family business. When he was thirteen, Ivan began helping his father enter data into a “minicomputer” which was a forerunner to the personal computers we know today and after completing Mildura Senior College began his career at oeDigital. Ivan embraced the rapid developments in the IT industry and expanded his own skills and knowledge considerably. While writing the company’s own internal program and managing business retail sales development, Ivan also wrote programs for other local businesses such as Noyce Kitchens, Hudaks Bakery, The Roofing Centre, Melbourne’s ACIB and more.

After completing year 11 at Mildura Senior College Ivan knew a career within the IT industry was what he wanted and he began working full-time in Sales with oeDigital.

Unlike many industries at that time, IT was developing rapidly. Ivan was keen to embrace the challenge of working in the ever-changing sector that would encourage him to expand his own skills and knowledge.

Ivan began with oeDigital in 1984, the same year that the Apple Macintosh was introduced to the worldwide market. With the popularity of the personal computer increasing, it was an exciting time to be in IT. Ivan’s genuine passion for IT, solid industry knowledge and friendly manner meant that he was always popular amongst a growing list of customers.

In 1994 oeDigital started up Ruralnet, the first internet provider in the region. Ivan and his old school friend Nick Lambropoulos set up the new internet service, unaware of just how significant and world-changing the technology would become.

After oeDigital sold Ruralnet in 1999, Ivan saw an opportunity to spread his wings outside of the family business and with 15 years of IT programming, sales and management experience under his belt, Ivan joined the new Ruralnet. He managed the company successfully for three years until they sold to iiNet. Ivan then returned to oeDigital for another three years while obtaining his Masters of Business Administration (MBA).

Grabbing the opportunity to try something new and expand his knowledge base, Ivan began a role in logistics for an interstate transport company. He streamlined the entire company and helped bring it to the very successful business it is today. Throughout his time there Ivan wrote a bestselling App, aimed to help Aussie truck drivers understand and fill in logbook requirements to stay legal and avoid fatigue fines. The first and currently the most successful business App of its kind in Australia. After gaining invaluable experience in this development role, Ivan again moved on, working for some years building up a state branch in the video security systems industry.

In mid-2014, Ivan returned  to the family business taking on the role of Chief Executive Officer. With a wealth of experience behind him, Ivan guides his oeDigital colleagues and ensures all their clients get the best advice for their needs.

Moving forward, Ivan is focused on combining the fabulous history of oeDigital with the exciting developments in both products and services. There is no doubt that Ivan and the team are driven to see oeDigital successfully service the community’s technology needs for many years to come.

‘The beauty of the IT industry is that people expect it to change and evolve. It’s easier to implement change because it’s the nature of technology.’
